Wilting Rose: Questions hover around the future of a historic mansion that has been a part of Bluffton’s history for centuries.
In many ways, the history of Rose Hill Mansion is the history of Bluffton itself. Resting at the center of what once was a thriving plantation, it was built by Dr. John Kirk, whose family name...
The Sandbox: Children’s museum fosters discovery, encourages play, and offers community
The Sandbox Children’s Museum opened its doors on Hilton Head Island in 2005 with a mission to provide inclusive and safe environments for children to learn and explore with their peers and caregivers through hands-on discovery and imaginative play. The driving force behind the mission is to cultivate the physical, social, and cognitive development of the island’s children as well as the thousands of children from around the world who visit here each year.

Maggie + Jevon Doin’ Lowcountry Stuff: Bikes and Burgers
Biking around Hilton Head Island is top on the list of things to do for many of our visitors. With over 60 miles of leisure paths available for exploring, you will be hard-pressed to hit them all on your week’s vacation. But we suggest you veer off those paths and do a little beach biking for an even better time.

This is a moment years in the making. It’s a lifestyle Tommy Prine was born into, but a spotlight he had to earn his own way.
Far More Than a Crowning Achievement:A budding leader hopes her Miss South Carolina win is just the beginning of a lifetime of impacting social change.
Julia Herrin is the crown-wearing embodiment of taking advantage of opportunity. At age 13, the shy piano-playing middle child of Lowcountry musical entrepreneurs Jeff and Jennifer Herrin decided to forge a completely foreign path by trying to become Miss Teen Hilton Head Island.
“My best friend, my mom, convinced me to try. I laughed it off at first. Me in pageants? I would never win, so why even try?” said the now-19-year-old Bluffton resident.
Pretty Darn Gets “Casual”: Behind the scenes of a cinematic showcase of island talent
Were it not for the cameras, it could be mistaken for any other night on Hilton Head Island. While locals and tourists milled about the long dock at the end of Simmons Road, drinks from Up the Creek Pub in hand, the first tendrils of sunset streaked pink against the sky’s lustrous orange tint. Broad Creek sparkled in its brilliance. A heron warily eyed the outgoing tide, preying on the minnows that darted between waves.

8 Faces of Summer Fun
Of course, you came to Hilton Head Island for the beach and maybe golf, tennis or pickleball. But what else is there to do? Plenty! Whether it’s tooling around town on a bike, flying through the trees on a zipline, racing a go-kart, reeling in your supper, dolphin watching, kayaking, paddle boarding, playing putt-putt golf, or riding a horse … beyond the beach, a colossal outdoor playground awaits.
Man Cave Mania: 10 tips for creating a guy’s getaway at home
Every guy deserves a dedicated space at home to be himself, relax, entertain his buddies with billiards or TV, or pursue some other passion. Plus, it seems that when it comes to stress recovery, men benefit from withdrawing a bit more than women do. A recent university study found that men’s cortisol levels dropped significantly when they had more solo leisure time in their own homes. Also, a poll conducted by houzz.com revealed that more than one-third of homes have a dedicated man cave, so it seems to be a sound investment of space and money.

Meet the Media: More than Just Talking Heads
In print, online and in living color, these are the media movers and shakers who keep the Lowcountry informed and entertained.
You invite them into your homes every day. You see their names on a byline or on a chyron running across the bottom of your TV screen, or hear them on your radio. But how well do you really know them? After all, by the nature of their job, they tend to take second billing to the story they’re trying to tell. Who they are is, by design, secondary to what they have to say.
If only for this month, we’re making the medium the message. These are the journalists and personalities who keep you in the loop on Lowcountry happenings big and small. In an era where the media has gotten a bad rap, it seems the perfect time for you to get to know our local media a little better.

News from “The Sound”: Taking the music of the Lowcountry beyond our shores
Late 2020 and early 2021 have seen an endless and varied list of music projects flow through my recording studio, “The Sound.” 2020 ended on a high note with the manifestation of a brand new, non-profit philanthropic endeavor: the Hilton Head Island Music and Arts Coalition (HHMAC). HHMAC focuses on addressing the needs of children in our community via the local Boys & Girls Club, Backpack Buddies, and the Beaufort County PTA. In its burgeoning online fundraising event known as “We Are the Island,” I was tasked with finding a safe and socially distanced recording and production process in which more than 45 singers, one rapper, three 10-person choirs, nine drummers, 10 guitar players, one pianist, bass player, organist, trombonist, and accordion player, would all appear together performing one song, the apt and timely Burt Bacharach classic, “What the World Needs Now.”

Feel the Vibrations: Fans see her as an abstract expressionist. But for J.R. Sandifer, it’s a means to share her spiritual energy on canvas.
On the surface, J.R. Sandifer is as much of an oddball fit for Lowcountry living as the art she creates. For decades, interior designers have labored to perfect the coastal chic look, full of sand...
Aerial Elements: Fitness takes flight
Twenty years ago, if you had told Lorrie Lancaster, owner of Aerial Elements in Bluffton, that she would be teaching aerial silks and performing aerial arts with skills like those she’d seen in Cirque du Soleil, she’d have told you that you were crazy.

Good Vibrations: Island musicians rally around a message of hope, unity and above all things… love.
Sound, in and of itself, is a miraculous thing. Taken at its simplest, most granular level, it is merely a vibration, a rippling of the air molecules all around us that generates a sympathetic vibration in everything it touches. Sound can shatter glass, or it can heal emotional wounds. It can move the soul, or it can start an avalanche. Sometimes, it does all those things at once.

Taking Back Soundboy Sunday
Before they were the Traveling Wilburys, they were just Jeff, Bob, Roy, George and Tom—five guys who had already changed the world of music. When they came together to form the legendary supergroup, it wasn’t because of each individual’s status in the pantheon of rock gods. It was because they just enjoyed hanging out with each other.
