For this month’s fashion feature, we decided to hop in the car and head down the mostly untraveled roads of South Carolina in search of interesting backdrops. When was the last time you just got in the car and went on a drive for the pure joy of exploring small towns and places you’ve never been before?
Far More Than a Crowning Achievement:A budding leader hopes her Miss South Carolina win is just the beginning of a lifetime of impacting social change.
Julia Herrin is the crown-wearing embodiment of taking advantage of opportunity. At age 13, the shy piano-playing middle child of Lowcountry musical entrepreneurs Jeff and Jennifer Herrin decided to forge a completely foreign path by trying to become Miss Teen Hilton Head Island.
“My best friend, my mom, convinced me to try. I laughed it off at first. Me in pageants? I would never win, so why even try?” said the now-19-year-old Bluffton resident.
I am calm. I am at peace. I am the still waters of a tranquil koi pond amid a bamboo forest. I am riding a wave of bliss emanating from the massage chair. I am ignoring the increasingly impatient woman currently grinding away at my toenails with a Dremel tool.
A Spotlight on Local Medical Professionals.
Since they opened in 2015, Hilton Head’s locally owned and operated Namaste Spa, located at Marriott’s Barony Beach Club, has always been considered a luxurious retreat, offering clients a certain level of well-appointed service. Recently, however, the spa has undergone a complete makeover, and as one would expect from a boutique spa housed inside one of the island’s most prestigious resorts, the transformation is a huge success. Now, more than ever, locals and visitors alike are enjoying Namaste’s upgraded serenity, space, and specialized service.

Stepping out in faith, Tavia Osterstock, licensed esthetician, partnered in opening Vitality Med Spa in the heart of Bluffton. Originally renting a small room to see her clients in Bluffton Village, her passion for skincare and vision for what could be blossomed in May of 2018 when she opened Vitality Med Spa with Dr. Kristi Blessitt. Blessitt, a medical doctor who had taken some family time, was now ready to go back to work with a focus on hormone replacement therapy and aesthetic injectables. Shortly after, Joanie Vilcheck, RN, joined Osterstock and Blessitt in providing IV vitamin therapy to further complete their spa services.
Raise your hand if you are exhausted: your multi-tasking, people-pleasing personality keeps you going through the motions, but your body, mind and spirit are screaming for a break. If you find yourself living in this constant state of stress and overwhelm—taking care of everybody else’s needs with no time for yourself—stop it! Because running around like a headless chicken is (a) unattractive (b) draining the life out of you, and © stealing your joy. It’s time to start looking out for number one.
Passion peeks out from behind a hot pink facemask as Afton Ryan calls a cheerful, “welcome in” to the customer who has just stepped into her charming Bluffton boutique, Egan + Ella. In spite of a pandemic that shut her doors just three months after opening, Ryan’s eyes gleam with a contagious energy you’ll want to catch.

Don’t start a fitness regimen solely to lose weight. Studies show that working out to “slim down” often backfires. First of all, because muscle weighs more than fat, some women gain weight with an...
Since the days of Cleopatra, rudimentary eyelash embellishments, often concocted of sticky, smelly substances, were a part of women’s beauty rituals. In 1872, French perfumer Eugene Rimmel did us all a favor when he invented the world’s first commercially available mascara made from petroleum jelly and coal dust. Well, ladies, we’ve come a long way!

Effortless Beauty: Permanent Cosmetics HHI offers life-changing options for enhancing your appearance
Are your eyebrows missing in action? Are your lips disappearing into your face? Are you tired of hiding embarrassing scars? Maybe it’s time to consider a more permanent solution than traditional makeup, which is not only time-consuming to apply but often melts off when you walk out the door.
According to Sarah Rhoads, owner of Permanent Cosmetics HHI (PCHHI) people choose to get permanent cosmetics for a variety of reasons. For some, it’s about saving time. (Imagine rolling out of bed with your brows and/or lips already done for the day!) For others, it’s a matter of no longer being able to apply makeup skillfully due to vision changes or decreased dexterity. And for men and women alike, it is often about restoring their appearance after an accident, injury or surgery. Whatever the initial reason for their visit to PCHHI, clients are raving about the results.
