The Bay Point Island Foundation: Dedicated to preservation, conservation, and education of the natural preserve

Accessible by boat, Bay Point Island is a privately owned barrier island located northeast of Hilton Head Island at the mouth of the Port Royal Sound. The island encompasses approximately 1,400 acres of marshland, maritime forest, beaches and sand dunes, a square footage larger than Central Park in New York City. A micro community of environmentalists, the island’s owners established the Bay Point Island Foundation in 2019 after decades of beach cleanups, shorebird protection, and working with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources on its sea turtle program.

With a Straight Face: Jim and Meredith Bannon bring their lighthearted approach to the serious business of the law.

If you’ve ever been on the megapopular website Reddit, you know that Redditors, as they are called, love to disagree on things. You can post something as innocuous as a picture of a piece of bread nailed to a tree (and someone has) and expect a full-blown brouhaha to break out. Which is what makes it so weird when they all find something they agree on.

Man Cave Mania: 10 tips for creating a guy’s getaway at home

Man Cave Mania: 10 tips for creating a guy’s getaway at home

Every guy deserves a dedicated space at home to be himself, relax, entertain his buddies with billiards or TV, or pursue some other passion. Plus, it seems that when it comes to stress recovery, men benefit from withdrawing a bit more than women do. A recent university study found that men’s cortisol levels dropped significantly when they had more solo leisure time in their own homes. Also, a poll conducted by houzz.com revealed that more than one-third of homes have a dedicated man cave, so it seems to be a sound investment of space and money.

Why are YOU here? This is a question I ask myself a lot about people in my life. I think the universe/God/the spaghetti monster (shout-out Kelly Stroud)/whomever or whatever you believe in, puts...

A Matter of Trust: Light, open and airy, this Hampton Hall home exemplifies Lowcountry coastal chic. But the story it tells goes far beyond bricks and beams.

Imagine yourself moving down here for the first time. Let’s even imagine that you’re moving down here all the way from Ohio (and statistically, you probably did). Now imagine trying to coordinate the building of a home—not just any home, but your dream home—over the phone. Through Facetime. Through text messages. Now try to imagine doing all that in the middle of a global pandemic.

Outside In: For Don and Becky Kimble, it all started with a marsh view. It ended with a Sea Pines home that exults in the extraordinary.

If there is a single defining element to the elegant Sea Pines Resort home of Don and Becky Kimble, it’s the marsh. That nearly uninterrupted view across spartina grass and winding tidal creeks was what drew the couple to the lot in the first place. And when Hurricane Matthew claimed their first home, that view ultimately became the driving force behind their new home.

Old World / New world

Old World / New world

When it comes to luxury homes, there are two distinctly different schools of thought in our little slice of the South. There is the classical “Lowcountry” luxury: think vast open spaces, natural textures, outdoor living and sense of Southern graces. Then there is the more traditional luxury, skewing contemporary with crisp lines, monochromatic color palettes with accent pieces here and there and materials that skew metallic.

Editor’s Note: March 2020

In late September of last year, local stylist Danielle Galella sent me a text message asking if Lucy could be a dog model for HGTV. We were headed out of town for a fashion shoot in Greenville on the date they were shooting, so unfortunately, I had to tell them she couldn’t swing it. Danielle got back to me again and said they would adjust their schedule; they really wanted a Bernese Mountain Dog for the shoot.
