Motherly Love

Motherly Love

Years ago, I used to joke that I was no one’s mother except the cat’s. That statement is no joke in that I have not carried a child in my womb, although I now have two stepdaughters, four grandsons...

Pet Health and Medications

Did you know that half of all pet poisonings involve human medicines? Many commonly used meds, both OTC and prescription, can be harmful or even fatal to your fur babies. The top 10 unsafe classes of meds are likely in our homes or brought in by household guests. The top two offenders are pain meds ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve). 5 Drinks with: Dr. Curtis Hennessey

For 25 years, Dr. Curtis Hennessey has been the face of veterinary medicine on the island. Since setting out his shingle, he’s seen cats and dogs and animals of all stripes (not to mention spots).

Beyond the many domestic animals that call the island home, he’s served as the long-time caregiver for Beaufort County’s trained dogs—and recently, one highly infamous opossum.

Before that, he was an Army brat who has lived everywhere from Thailand to Egypt and nearly everywhere in between, cultivating a love of animals at every stop. In honor of our pet issue, we sat down with Hilton Head’s answer to Dr. Doolittle to talk shop.
