The Journey I Could Never Have Scripted

The Journey I Could Never Have Scripted

I didn’t fit in much as a kid. I was as comfortable playing point guard as I was playing Dungeons and Dragons, and thusly, neither the jocks nor the nerds knew what to make of me. So, they both picked on me, and I was an easy mark because I let them see they got to me.

Over Yonder and Back Again: My life in Southern cities

Over Yonder and Back Again: My life in Southern cities

Growing up, my immediate family did not seem overwhelmingly Southern. We were Catholic, after all, and we never cooked traditional Southern food at home, preferring Lebanese, our ethnic cuisine. We also did not plant window boxes full of flowers or sit on the porch at twilight, drinking sweet tea with lemon slices. Being young and unaware for the most part about what “Southern” even meant, I had to rely on the stereotypes I gleaned from pop culture—that is, until the day I left South Carolina and lived in a few other cities in the South.

Working from Home: What happens when you give an Interior Designer a chance to create her own home from the ground up? You get this Oldfield Masterpiece

As one of the principals of Blue Palm Interiors, Holly Blocker is no stranger to making a good home look great. Having moved down from Kentucky three years ago, she has quickly become an expert in the peccadillos of the traditional Lowcountry style: the subdued color palette, the natural textures, the clean lines.

Two-Wheelin’ Fun: Ride your bicycle on Hilton Head Island without taking an unscheduled tour of the ER.

Summer has arrived! Grab the sunscreen, hit the beach, light up the BBQ grill, fill the cooler, or hop on your bike—all things we do to celebrate the days of summer without even thinking. Actually, though, we do need to put some thought into biking safely, sharing the space and showing courtesy to others on our leisure paths and roads.

Meet the Turtle Trackers

Meet the Turtle Trackers

It was during the 2015 nesting season and, like any other day on sea turtle patrol, I was answering the same basic questions about our activities on the beach. Inquiring bystanders want to see the eggs if we are moving them and understand how they got there.

Sign of the Times: Under the steady hand of Captain Tom Doyle, Commander Zodiac sails toward the future.

For the time being, we’re going to assume that you don’t need to be told what Commander Zodiac is. This is, after all, an operation that shepherded countless people across the waves toward life-long memories every day for 34 years in South Beach Marina. If you’re one of the lucky few who grew up on the island, you may have even spent a summer or two working for its captain, Tom Doyle. If you’re one of the many who came here on vacation and never left, that decision may have well been made aboard one of their signature rafts.

The Thin Blue Line: Meet the men and women behind the badge who are keeping the streets of Beaufort County safe.

As you make your way around Beaufort County, their reassuring presence is everywhere. Not just behind the wheel of a police cruiser, you’ll find the men and women of law enforcement walking the streets, engaging the community and fulfilling their promise to protect and serve.

Sure, you may not be so glad to see them when you get caught playing fast and loose with the speed limit; we’ve all been there. But when you need them the most, it’s comforting to know how seriously our police officers take their sworn duty.

And for them, that’s exactly what it is. Not just a job. Not just a calling. Theirs is a vow to guard over our community, risking life and limb every day they walk out the door. On behalf of our entire community, it is a privilege to spotlight a few of our finest.

Forget peanut butter and jelly. Alex Vitto and Robbie Colson, the co-creators of Nood Good Mood Food, go together like Asian fries and ginger yuzu aioli. Like spam and gourmet cheese sauce. How to Get Divorced

How to Get Divorced

Though I have never sought a divorce, several friends and family members have, and each have shared insights into their experience both during and after their divorce. Whether it was an “amicable” Gwyneth Paltrow-Chris Martin consciously uncoupling divorce, or it was more of a Kathleen Turner-Michael Douglas in War of the Roses divorce, undoubtedly one distinct fact remained: Divorce is hard. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” said one friend, who in addition to being a competitive mountain biker, also survived thyroid cancer prior to his divorce.

On Course to Live the Dream: After a decorated junior and collegiate career, Bluffton’s Bryson Nimmer is scoring wins en route to PGA stardom

Even when you’re a first-team All-American and ACC Player of the Year and have a family name synonymous with success like Bryson Nimmer, there is no magical fast pass to PGA Tour fame. To earn stardom among thousands of wannabe legends, the 23-year-old Bluffton native knows he must first surrender to the process—one to two years on development tours (the PGA’s minor leagues), constant travel, and Monday PGA Tour qualifier pressure cookers, fighting for a big-league tee time in tourney fields full of teen phenoms and 50-year-old former stars.

The Difference of Design: Kelly Caron Designs puts a premium on professionalism and experience.

There’s a certain look to Lowcountry homes and businesses, one that is often emulated beyond the confines of the 843 area code, but never truly duplicated. It lies at the intersection of comfort and sophistication—where nickel-gap shiplap accent walls and craftsman style millwork in crisp whites meet the rustic grain of reclaimed wood and the dull sheen of hammered copper.

Outside In: For Don and Becky Kimble, it all started with a marsh view. It ended with a Sea Pines home that exults in the extraordinary.

If there is a single defining element to the elegant Sea Pines Resort home of Don and Becky Kimble, it’s the marsh. That nearly uninterrupted view across spartina grass and winding tidal creeks was what drew the couple to the lot in the first place. And when Hurricane Matthew claimed their first home, that view ultimately became the driving force behind their new home.
