In order to be truly effective, an education can’t be one-size-fits-all. Because children aren’t one-size-fits-all; each young mind experiencing the world through a very different lens than the rest. There are certain basics that are going to apply to everyone, to be sure. But to really reach a student, to meet them where they are and prepare them for the world that awaits them beyond the classroom, requires something a little more custom-fit.
A young, gifted mind that might wither on the vine in a traditional classroom setting might also flourish and blossom to its fullest when given the opportunity to explore lessons through their own medium. It could be putting paint on canvas, using their hands and their minds to build something, exploring movement, making music, there are a legion of kids whose minds simply thrive in an environment of artistic expression.
That is, in essence, the core philosophy of Hilton Head School for the Creative Arts. To fold state and national standards for educational excellence into a program that allows students to explore visual arts, theatre, creative writing, music, dance, and new multimedia frontiers of expression. To create a bridge between the curriculum and the student that might not be as strong in a traditional environment. And, crucially, to consciously evolve in all that they do.

Dr. Staci Souhan, Principal of Hilton Head School for the Creative Arts.
“The one thing I want people to know is that Hilton Head School for the Creative Arts is a school that never stops improving,” said Dr. Staci Souhan, Principal of HHSCA. “While we are proud of our strong traditions and long history of excellence in arts integration and our gifted programing, we are equally excited about the future. We are continually looking for innovative ways to meet the needs of today’s learners while staying true to our mission of developing creative, confident, and capable students.”
Joining the school in July of last year, Dr. Souhan came to Hilton Head with a wealth of experience gained over 20 years in education at every level from the classroom to administration.
“When my husband and I began considering our relocation to the Lowcountry, we knew the decision would be centered on finding the right school community. As an educator, I was very intentional about where I wanted to invest my time and find a mutual fit,” she said. “What drew me most to Hilton Head School for the Creative Arts was its long-standing ABC certification and dedication to arts integration. The arts provide students with meaningful opportunities to create, innovate, collaborate, and express themselves in ways that deepen learning across all content areas. Research consistently shows that arts-integrated learning supports critical thinking, problem-solving, engagement, and academic achievement.”

Right away, it was clear that her own educational philosophy blended perfectly with the school’s approach. As impressive as her resume was going into the job, what she found at the school impressed her equally.
“Without question, our greatest strengths are our students and our staff. Our staff members are deeply committed to children and consistently go above and beyond to ensure every student feels supported, challenged, and valued,” Dr. Souhan said. “Our students bring an incredible energy to the school. They are creative, curious, joyful, and eager to try new things. They love to learn, perform, create, and explore. Their enthusiasm is contagious and contributes to a school culture that is both welcoming and inspiring.”
Now firmly settled into the role, she aims to more closely align the school’s focus on engagement and achievement, two of Beaufort County School District’s four pillars of its current strategic plan.

Now firmly settled into the role, Dr Souhan aims to more closely align the schools focus with the District Strategic Pillars of Engagement and Achievement, centering its mission of student learning.
“That may sound straightforward, but it represents an important shift in how we think and talk about our work. Instead of focusing primarily on what is being taught, we are increasingly focused on what students are learning and the evidence that demonstrates that learning. We continually ask ourselves: What impact are our efforts having on students?” she said. “Our vision for engagement is simple but powerful. We want every student to leave school each day feeling proud of what they accomplished and confident in their ability to succeed. We want every member of our team to end each day feeling valued, capable, and proud of the difference they made. When educators work together, believe in their collective ability to help students succeed, and continually learn from one another, student outcomes improve.”
Of course, that’s just the means. The ends are self-evident.

“Ultimately, our goal is to create an environment where students, staff, and families feel connected, supported, inspired, and empowered to grow,” Dr. Souhan said.
Another goal the principal is pursuing as she takes the rein at Hilton Head School for Creative Arts is the addition of a Montessori program. Focusing on self-directed, hands-on learning, natural child development, and independence rather than traditional lecturing and testing, this program is a natural extension of the school’s philosophy.
“This addition will expand learning opportunities for families and provide another pathway for students to develop independence, curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. It fits perfectly with our gifted and arts programming,” she said. “Most importantly, SCA is a place where students are known, valued, and encouraged to discover their unique talents. Families will find a school community that celebrates creativity, embraces innovation, and is committed to helping each child thrive.”
