Anyone who has lived in the Lowcountry for a few years is celebrating September right now. We’ve made it to “our” season. Less heat, less humidity, fewer mosquitoes. More festivals, more togetherness, and a sense of calm settles over the island.
The only downside to the kickoff to fall is that we still have those pesky storms, birthed off the coast of Africa, on which to keep a wary eye. I challenged writer Heather Quinn to delve into the topic of “hurrications” on page 131, with suggestions on where to go – if, indeed, we must go.
This month will find us out and about, reacquainting ourselves with other longtime locals at events like Harbour Town’s Shrinp Festival, the Hilton Head Island Music Jam (returning for its third year), and the Roots & Rivers Festival at Oyster Factory Park.
Our resident foodie, Jesse Blanco from Eat It and Like It, will pair up with Amie Baima and Skillets Cafe to present Fried Chicken and Bubbles on September 24. For more info and to grab your tickets before it sells out, cruise over to page 139.
And that segues beautifully into what our September issue always features – our Love Affair with Food!
As you flip through these pages you’ll find features on the new Ma Daisy’s Porch, Squat ‘N’ Gobble, Firemost Pizza, and Charlie’s L’Etoile Verte (Green Star). Dr. Heather Hinshelwood writes about the unfortunate food pyramid most of us grew up with, and how to alter our diets for health and longevity.
On page 98 we feature Dynamic Duos in a section devoted to business owners who have found the yin to their yang, and the customer is winning as a result.
The Great Gatsby comes to the Seaglass Theatre in September, and our very own copy editor Lynne Hummell will take the stage as Mrs. McKee. See the story on page 136.
Music & Taste on the Harbour returns to Shelter Cove on Thursday evenings and don’t miss Palmetto Bluff’s Flow Fest on September 27, a celebration of art and music.
Be sure to check our calendar for can’t-miss events – and I hope to see you out there!
