Over the past month, our town council and community have come together to protect Hilton Head Island’s unique character, invest in our future, and address our most pressing safety challenges. Two key issues have guided our recent actions – the tragic shooting during the July Fourth holiday and the urgent need to improve safety along the William Hilton Parkway corridor. Both remain at the heart of our ongoing commitment to public safety on the island.
Prioritizing Island Safety
Following a special town council meeting on July 9 to focus on law enforcement and public safety:
• We have started installing advanced surveillance systems around Coligny Beach and Lowcountry Celebration Park.
• We are implementing landscape improvements to increase safety, enhance visibility, and further beautify the Coligny Circle area, including the Coligny Beach Park parking lot and Lagoon Road.
• We have tasked our legal counsel with researching and advising us on a potential youth curfew ordinance.
• We continue to conduct detailed assessments and collaborate closely with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office to address recent safety concerns on the island, including the use of local security guards. Together, we are focused on establishing a proactive path to ensure a secure environment for everyone. The safety of our residents and visitors remains our highest priority.
Advancing the U.S. 278 Corridor Master Plan
On July 28, town council held an extensive workshop to review the revised $125.8 million William Hilton Parkway Corridor Master Plan. This comprehensive plan features eight distinct safety and traffic improvement projects, spanning from Jenkins Island to Jarvis Creek. With 57,000 to 62,000 vehicles traveling in this corridor daily, congestion is a leading cause of nearly half the crashes at major intersections. Every day of delay puts lives at risk, and I am committed to advancing this plan decisively. The council will vote on a resolution of support at an upcoming meeting.
Investing in Our Youth and Neighborhoods
Crossings Park Upgrades: We have unveiled plans to build a new concrete skate park at Bristol Sports Arena and a pump track at Crossings Park. Inspired by the enthusiasm of our local teen skating community, this project will offer a free, multigenerational outdoor space for everyone to enjoy. Additionally, new pickleball courts will be added at Crossings. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
Workforce Housing: Our public-private partnership at Northpoint on Jarvis Creek reached a major milestone in July as framing began. It is exciting to see this neighborhood taking shape. As construction continues, its official website (northpointonjarviscreek.com) along with its Facebook and Instagram channels provide a hub for residents, stakeholders, and community members to track progress and stay informed.
