As summer winds down and we head into fall, we want to make sure you are prepared for hurricane season, know about the town’s free shuttle service in the Historic District, and join us in recognizing the Bluffton Police Department for its continued mission of providing for the Bluffton community.
Be Prepared During Hurricane Season
We are in the heart of hurricane season, which runs June 1 through November 30. If you are new to Bluffton – and we know many of you are – now is the time to learn how our community prepares for severe weather.
The town’s website includes frequently asked questions about hurricanes, evacuations, re-entry procedures, and other emergency information. You can also find the South Carolina Emergency Management Division’s 2026 Hurricane Guide there. Visit the town’s website at townofbluffton.sc.gov and search “FAQ hurricane” or “Hurricane Guide 2026.”
Don’t wait until a storm is approaching to plan for a storm – and remember to include your pets. Storms can develop and approach quickly, leaving little time to prepare. Know your evacuation route, review your insurance coverage, and take steps now to prepare your home. If you remember only three things, make them these: refill any prescriptions you may need, fill your vehicle with gas, and have some cash on hand. If the power goes out, ATMs and credit card machines might not work.
Help Us Take Care of the May River
September also gives all of us an opportunity to help protect one of Bluffton’s most cherished natural resources, the May River.
The 37th annual Bluffton Beach Sweep/River Sweep will be held Saturday, September 19, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Oyster Factory Park, 63 Wharf Street.
Bring your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers and spend a morning helping care for the May River. There is no need to bring supplies. Just show up – the town will provide what you need.
Getting Around Old Town
Thank you to everyone who has used our free Old Town shuttle service. The town launched the service this summer with a local golf cart tour company to help residents and visitors get around while several infrastructure projects affect parking and street access.
The free shuttle operates Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stops include Wright Family Park, the Mellichamp Drive/Bluffton Road area, and the M.C. Riley Complex, making it easier to park and ride to Old Town shops, restaurants, parks, and attractions.
The shuttle is another way we can support our Old Town businesses while the town makes long-term investments in drainage, safety, walkability, and infrastructure. This service will continue for a few years to allow time for the Town to finish projects in the Historic District.
Congratulations to the Bluffton Police Department
I am proud to recognize the Bluffton Police Department for another significant accomplishment. The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, known as CALEA, selected our department to receive its Meritorious Award on Accreditation.
This is the first time the department has earned this recognition after maintaining CALEA accreditation for nearly 17 years. The award recognizes years of work updating policies, following nationally recognized best practices, and making sure those high standards are part of everyday police operations.
Congratulations to Chief Joe Babkiewicz and every member of the Bluffton Police Department. This achievement belongs to the entire team.
