For Jennifer Richardson and Jonathan Griz, the path to marriage wasn’t marked by a chance meeting or a whirlwind romance. Instead, it unfolded over nearly two decades, beginning in childhood at First Baptist Church Hilton Head, winding through years apart, and eventually reconnecting at exactly the right moment.
Long before they shared a first date, attended the University of Alabama together, or exchanged vows, their lives had been quietly intersecting. What started as childhood memories eventually blossomed into a relationship grounded in friendship, shared faith, and a deep trust in God’s direction for their lives.

When they were married on June 7, 2026, they weren’t simply celebrating the start of a new chapter. They were honoring a journey years in the making, a journey they believe had been guided by God’s hand from the very beginning, long before either of them could see where it would lead.
In fact, their connection reaches back even farther than either of them realized. More than 22 years ago, Jennifer’s mother, Lisa Richardson, attended a baby shower for Jonathan’s mother, Mary Beth Griz. A photograph from that day shows family friends gathered around Mary Beth in prayer as she awaited Jonathan’s arrival. Just a few months later, Lisa discovered she was expecting Jennifer. Looking back, the image feels like an early glimpse of a story still waiting to unfold.

A Familiar Face, A New Beginning
Jennifer and Jonathan first knew each other at 5 or 6 years old, through church, Vacation Bible School, and growing up in the same faith community. As they grew older, they lost touch. For nearly a decade, their paths rarely crossed, until an unexpected reunion during their senior year of high school. On October 27, 2021, at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ annual Fields of Faith event, held at Christian Academy, both Jonathan and Jennifer were participating in the event and found themselves seated beside one another that evening.
They recognized each other immediately. “We knew who each other was, but we had never communicated or talked to each other since we were kids,” Jennifer said.
After they had spoken, they spent the rest of the evening talking. Jonathan got Jennifer’s number, and within a few days, he asked her to dinner. “I wasn’t super nervous because I knew she’d say yes,” Jonathan said.
Their first date was at Captain Woody’s in Old Town Bluffton. Dinner turned into hours of conversation in the car. “We got into the car and just talked for three hours,” Jonathan said.
Jennifer was excited, but also cautious. Jonathan was already committed to play golf at the University of Alabama. “I had a lot of feelings of, ‘Well, we’re both seniors in high school and he’s about to go to college out of state, and I don’t know where I’m going to school yet,’” she said. “I felt reserved, like, should I pursue this?”
Still, something about their connection felt worth exploring.

From First Dates to First Love
Their second date was at Agave in Old Town Bluffton, and it brought one of those small moments that becomes sweet family history. As Jonathan drove Jennifer home, he reached for her hand. “I remember it distinctly,” Jennifer said. “He mustered up the courage to hold my hand going back to my house, which was cute.”
For several months, they dated, spent time together, and built a friendship while Jennifer continued to wrestle with wondering whether or not a relationship would work if they were headed in different directions?
Then the unexpected happened.
“My parents and I went to visit at the University of Alabama and really loved it,” Jennifer said. Once she made her decision, Jennifer surprised Jonathan during a family lunch by texting him a photo of herself with his golf coach holding a sign that read, “I’m going to Bama.” Later that day, Jonathan told her for the first time that he loved her.

Growing Together at Alabama
The next four years at the University of Alabama became a defining chapter in their relationship. Jonathan played Division I men’s golf, while Jennifer pursued her studies and developed a love for hospitality, weddings, and events. Their college years were full of growth, but not without challenges.
“The past four years we spent together at the University of Alabama were far from perfection in our relationship, but we always had Christ to depend on,” the couple shared. “Those years have grown us individually and together in so many ways.”
They stayed together throughout college, weathering the normal struggles of young adulthood while continuing to build a relationship rooted in faith and shared commitment. In the summer of 2025, Jonathan began planning the proposal. He purchased the ring in Birmingham and chose to keep the moment low-key and personal.
On June 24, 2025, he and Jennifer went for a bike ride. To avoid giving anything away, he hid the ring on the chain of the necklace he was wearing. They rode to a quiet, private beach dock area in their neighborhood, where he asked her to marry him.
Of course, she said “yes.”
The couple kept the news mostly private at first, sharing it by word of mouth and waiting until engagement photos later that summer before making it widely known.

A Garden Party by the Water
Jennifer’s older sister was getting married that summer, so Jennifer took time to celebrate her sister before diving into her own plans. By mid-August, before returning to school, Jennifer and Jonathan secured the reception venue: the Champions Ballroom at Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines.
The wedding design reflected Jennifer’s eye for beauty and detail. During her senior year, she worked for a talented florist and event designer, gaining hands-on experience. The company, GLOW Floral and Events Design from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was one of the designers selected to decorate the White House for Christmas 2025. Owner Tammy West and her team gifted Jennifer by coming to Hilton Head to design the table candlescapes for the wedding reception from Jennifer’s vision.
“I wanted a very garden party, fun, classy, elegant vibe,” Jennifer said. Bright pink florals, lush greenery, candlelight, and a glowing reception space helped bring that vision to life.

The Weekend Begins
The wedding weekend began with a bridesmaids’ luncheon, where Jennifer gathered the most special people in her life that represented a span of time from her lifelong childhood friends through her most recent college friends, her two sisters, and two future sisters-in-law for an afternoon of gifts, laughter, and reflection.
The remainder of the weekend blended Lowcountry traditions with time spent alongside family and friends who had traveled from near and far to celebrate the couple.
The ceremony was to be held at Providence Presbyterian Church, a beautiful location that also the traditional sanctuary setting that the couple desired. Following a rehearsal at the church, family and friends gathered at Moss Creek’s Bostwick Pavilion for a rehearsal dinner, which included a full spread of oysters in homage to the Lowcountry setting.
Photos chronicling Jennifer and Jonathan’s relationship decorated the space, while an open-mic portion of the evening gave loved ones the opportunity to share stories, memories, and well wishes before the big day. Guests later enjoyed boat rides through the Lowcountry, adding a distinctly coastal touch to the celebration.

The Wedding Day
The morning of their wedding day was filled with anticipation as Jennifer prepared alongside her bridesmaids, mothers, and grandmothers before heading to Harbour Town for photographs. Groom and groomsmen got ready at the clubhouse also.
Music played a meaningful role in the ceremony. Local jazz director James Berry served as pianist while his daughter, Emma, accompanied on cello. One of Jennifer’s bridesmaids, an Alabama roommate, also performed a beautiful solo.
During the ceremony, both sets of parents joined Jennifer and Jonathan at the altar for a special time of prayer, creating a powerful moment of unity, reflection, and gratitude before the couple began their life together. As Jennifer and Jonathan stood before their family and friends, honoring the Lord remained central to the day. The ceremony was not simply a beautiful formality, but a worshipful beginning to their marriage.
The reception at the Champions Ballroom was everything Jennifer and Jonathan had hoped it would be: joyful, emotional, elegant, and filled with the people they love most.
“Our reception was the perfect way to celebrate our brand-new marriage union,” the couple shared. “It was filled with all of our favorite people joined together to cry, laugh, and dance with us.”
The evening included heartfelt prayers from both fathers and speeches from Jennifer’s sisters, Rachael and Grace, as well as Jonathan’s close friends Derek Bunce and Matthew Hammen. Together, their words reflected the love, faith, and friendships that had supported the couple throughout their journey.
After the speeches, Jennifer and Jonathan slipped away with their photographer for sunset portraits on the 18th green. With the Harbour Town Lighthouse and Calibogue Sound in the distance, the scene created a breathtaking backdrop for some of the most memorable images of the day.
They returned to the reception to greet guests, dance, enjoy cake, and soak in every remaining moment. The night ended in true Alabama Crimson Tide fashion. Guests joined in singing “Dixieland Delight” by Alabama, and each received an Alabama shaker as part of the celebration.
For their final exit, Jennifer and Jonathan left from the front of the clubhouse and hopped onto the back of a golf cart, riding away into their first night as husband and wife.
The Harbour Town setting carried special significance for the Griz family. Three decades earlier, Jonathan’s parents became engaged during Heritage week on the golf course. Years later, Jennifer and Jonathan would celebrate their reception overlooking those same fairways. For Jonathan, whose dream is to one day compete on the PGA Tour, the location represents yet another meaningful connection – one he hopes will come full circle if he returns to Harbour Town as a professional golfer.

A Future Rooted in Faith
Now, as newlyweds, Jennifer and Jonathan are stepping into a future shaped by the same faith that has guided their story from the beginning.
Jonathan, after playing four years of Division I men’s golf at Alabama, is working toward his lifelong dream of playing on the PGA Tour. Jennifer hopes to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, specializing in weddings and events, where she can use her attention to detail and desire to make moments unforgettable.
Together, they are eager to see what God has ahead.
For Jennifer and Jonathan Griz, marriage represents the continuation of a journey that began long before either of them understood where it would lead – a story rooted in faith, strengthened through friendship, and guided by a belief that God was present in every chapter.
“Now, as newlyweds navigating the plans that the Lord has for us,” they said, “we are both grateful and eager to see what’s in store.”
